Best Houseplants for Beginners

Not all houseplants are created equal. Some are perfectly happy to forgive you when you forget to water them, while others will dramatically drop a leaf the second you look at them funny. If you’re new to houseplants, I recommend starting with a variety that is a little more forgiving. Here are a few of my favorite houseplants for beginners!

Pothos — Pothos are an absolute classic! I love these for a beginner because they’re incredibly tolerant, grow super fast, and are easy to propagate. Pothos prefer bright, indirect light, and want to be watered when the top inch or two has gone dry.

Philodendron — Philodendron are another great option for beginners. Similar to the pathos, they are super tolerant. The real reason I love them for a plant newbie, though, is that there are just so many varieties; there’s truly something for everybody! You can start with one and before you know it, you’ll be wondering how you ended up with six.

ZZ Plant — ZZs are probably my number one recommendation for somebody with zero plant experience. They can adapt to almost any lighting situation and only need water about once a month - you can’t get much easier than that! Their glossy leaves are also absolutely stunning! If you are the kind of person who occasionally forgets that you own plants, this might be your match.

Monstera — Monsteras are iconic. There are so many varieties, and their leaves can get HUGE! I recommend starting with a baby, giving it a good trellis + some bright light, and just watching it thrive! Without proper support, these guys can definitely get a little out-of-hand, but if they’re given something to climb, they will reward you.

Hoya — I couldn’t make this list without including my favorite variety of plants, could I? Personally, I find Hoyas to be some of the easiest plants on the plant. They like bright, indirect light and to dry out between waterings — perfect for somebody who might forget to water often. There are so many unique varieties with stunning foliage, and with the right care, will produce jaw-dropping blooms. I cannot recommend enough!

The best beginner plant is ultimately one that fits your home and your lifestyle. Pay attention to the light you have, be honest about how often you’re likely to remember to water, and choose a plant that works with those conditions. And if you’re not sure what that plant is, come see us! We’re always happy to help you find a plant that will actually thrive in your home—not just one that looks cute on the shelf.
